When designing or relaunching your company website, you’ve got a lot of options to consider. Should you use video, sliders, hero images, animated navigation, etc.
When defining your brand and brand message, you will clarify who your tribes (target market) is so you’ll know who you are designing for. And that’s the first key…
- Design your website for your tribe, not your ego.
Your website is there to tell your story to your prospects and customers. They have to know you understand them and you are talking directly to them.
- KISS – Keep It Simple Silly
The simpler, the better. The only things on your website should be there to help move your prospect along the path of becoming a customer. If it does not server that purpose, remove it. Most websites are far too busy and complicated. You really cannot be too simple.
- Design for mobile first
In 2018, over 60% of searches are performed from a mobile device. Your site has to be designed to display on mobile, navigate easily on mobile and appear on the first page of the search results. If a prospect cannot find you early in their process to find an architect, you will never even be considered for the job.
- Follow design standards
It may be tempting to design something cool and different for your website. You might think it makes you stand out. Be different in your branding, not in your design. Website visitors have come to expect certain things from website. The logo is in the top left. Navigation across the top or down the left. When you break these standards, you confuse your visitor. If they cannot find what they want quickly…..they will leave.
- Make if fast
A fast loading website is a win/win. You win because it will rank higher in the search results. The search engines favor fast sites in their results. Your visitor wins because they don’t have to wait. According to surveys done by Akamai and Gomez.com, 47% of web users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less. 40% will abandon a site that doesn’t load within 3 seconds.
